ABSTRACT

Social media can be a better way for some users to ask us questions. Second Life (SL) has been put forward as a source for virtual reference services. It gives users who do not want to approach a desk in a physical library another way of getting help. A Second Life Reference Desk was begun in January 2007, with volunteers from the USA, Europe and Australia. It helped users to see libraries as a global service and aided librarian career development. This does not mean that we should agree with the extreme views of Michael Gorman, former President of the American Library Association: The author don't believe that social networking sites provide any real, practical advantage to library services the bottom line is that users of Twitter and Facebook are the victims of a massive advertising scam, and libraries perhaps more than anyone, are best out of it.
