ABSTRACT

Institutional repositories are becoming essential tools for universities. In the competitive environment of a global higher education market, Open Access repositories provide a platform on which a university can showcase its research. Open Access helps prospective students make a judgment on which university to choose, shares blue-skies research with the widest possible audience and supports outreach activity to open up higher education to new communities. One of the oldest repositories in the world, that at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, has collected many thousands of full-text articles since the mandate was implemented at the beginning of 2004. Two phenomena will be particularly strong influencers on how repositories develop in future. One is the nature of scholarly enquiry itself and the other is the use of computational technologies on the research corpus. Another development area will be especially intense that of repository services.
