ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the background to a mechanism designed to capture prior experience and convert it into a language the university can understand and assess. It is placed in a context of assessment generally with a helpful explanation of the French Government system, not least because assessment is at the heart of university education and as highlighted in the case studies important to learners. The practical delivery of this procedure is then discussed using Middlesex University as the example. The assessment of work-based learning is a central issue for all higher education institutions trying to engage in work-based learning. Three-way learning agreements between the individual work-based learner, the employer and the higher education institution are often key to the customisation of shell modules and generic outcomes to specific work contexts. The learning agreements themselves would often be assessed and could identify appropriate forms of assessment for customised shell modules.
