ABSTRACT

The transformation of the socio-economic system in Poland and other emerging economies in Central and Eastern Europe, ongoing for over two decades, has contributed to profound changes in the region’s economy, including the spatial organisation of industrial production. The economic structures formed under the centrally planned system underwent a gradual transformation, leading to greater spatial diversity on a regional scale, which has been of interest to many researchers (Gorzelak 1993, 2000, Szlachta 1993, Domański R. 1997, Kukliński, Mync and Szul 1997, Czyż 1998, Parysek 1998, Stryjakiewicz 1999, Domański B. 2001, Zioło 2006). These change processes have also been significantly influenced by changes in industrial activity, as reflected by the relocation and concentration of new enterprises in certain regions. In particular, this is indicated by foreign investment flowing into select regions. This may be accompanied by the closure of existing industrial plants (Pavlinek and Smith 1998, Domański B. 2001, Domański B. and Gwosdz 2005).
