ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers an overview on a wide range of situations involving ubiquitous musics in order to make the case for their relevance as a research subject. It aims to present some valuable and very diverse approaches to ubiquitous musics that have developed on and across different disciplinary fields often on the edges of these fields. The book describes histories that consider some historical antecedents of ubiquitous musics. It explores technologies that deals with ubiquitous musics associated with specific technical devices and with technology-related concepts: cell phones in India, the presence of visible playback technologies in films and portable digital players. The book illustrates spaces that discuss some settings where ubiquitous musics are often present, such as malls, stores, gyms, offices and cars. Aural spaces represent a fundamental component of everybody's daily lives.
