ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the importance of art in re-creating an image of the destination that is grounded in the past. The relationship between art and travel is rooted in the history of civilization and the development of human societies. Long before the internet and international media organizations, the travel journals and pieces of art travellers created and transported across the globe were important ways of informing citizens about worlds other than their own. These detailed travel journals and artwork created in past centuries played a role in motivating future travellers to embark on journeys to remote countries. As can be understood from the work of Donald Wilber, journals, travel books and diaries accompanied with sketches, drawings and paintings created by tourists in the previous centuries are more than just travel memoirs and art. They are historical documents illustrating the natural, historical and cultural settings of the old world.
