ABSTRACT

The basic premise of this edited book is that cities—and especially global ones—have been able to survive over the centuries because of their resilience. Some of them are very old and to this day remain the center of their respective regions. Others are much younger but already have undergone pressures and changes that required the engagement of civic leaders and planners to move beyond the challenges they face and achieve the global status that they enjoy. The focus of most of the chapters in this book is on documenting recent experiences of resilience in 13 global cities from all the inhabited continents of the world. It is hoped that this search for commonalities in dealing with the distress they are experiencing will offer lessons to be learned by other cities.
