ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why the EU has decided a cross-border initiative such as GEDERI (Gestion et Developpment des Regions Insulaires), which focuses specifically on insular regions, is a worthwhile endeavor for tackling their shared problems and concerns. It examines the main tourism-related tasks which have been planned or are currently under-way as part of this ongoing project. Suggestions are provided on how the project aims to contribute to the sustainable development of Europe's islands. Among the objectives of the Island's Commission is to ensure the various countries and the institutions of the EU acknowledge the island's problems and, thus, implement appropriate policies to solve these. The commission aims to foster interregional co-operation between islands, especially on issues in direct relation with their insularity. It has been argued that, unfortunately, one of the stumbling blocks to realizing the aims of the GEDERI project has been and continues to be the inadequacy of information from the various islands participating in the project.
