ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the Lake Constance example and gives a closer view of the implementation process of a destination management strategy in a border region. The fact that the German side was represented by two tourism associations the Tourimusverband Bodensee Oberschwaben (TBO) and the Internationale Bodenseeverkehrsverein (IBV) for the entire cross-border area called for more efficient structures. With regard to the implementation of a destination management strategy, the project-orientated cross-border co-operation as it took place within the scope of Interreg-programs has further disadvantages. Cross-border reservation and booking systems or electronically linked services such as the BodenseeErlebniskarte have different advantages for the destination management. For international destinations, additional legal and technical problems have to be considered. The implementation of a destination management strategy is a difficult task, not only in border regions. Even on a national level, numerous psychological barriers have to be overcome, which are even more intense in international co-operations.
