ABSTRACT

This is an informal review of a six-year collaborative effort to find and develop effective performance management tools for small and medium-sized social enterprises (SMSEs). It primarily involved two managing directors of two community development organizations based in Southampton: West Itchen Community Trust (WICT) and RISE Community Development Trust (RISE). It is worth noting that SMSEs make up the majority of social enterprises (SEs) (IFF 2005), and this finding concurred with our experience in the networks we are involved with, in that very few employ more than 10 full-time employees. Therefore, although not consciously at first, our performance tools concentrated on our own SMSE, which (inadvertently) matches the majority of SEs; that is, ranging from pre-start up to those employing 50 employees.
