ABSTRACT

Autism, or ASD, is generally now seen not as a behavioural or social disorder, but as a group of brain-based whole-body disorders with organic causes. It is a global problem with the way the brain is wired some sections of the brain are over-sized, some are under-sized, and the individual neuron connections of the brain are closer and clumped, yet not well-networked across other areas of the brain. The overall effect of this is that someone with ASD has a greater awareness of input than normal, but a poor ability to co-ordinate it or process it in a global manner. Autism is diagnosed by the triad of impairments' impairment of communication, social interaction, and imagination. The paediatrician struggled to get James's attention, to get close to him, or to interest him for long with toys. A diagnosis was made of his having behaviour suggestive of ASD.
