ABSTRACT

This contribution deals with the Swedish understanding of some of the international legal issues involved in the use of force by the international community in Afghanistan. The international legal issues involved pertain to the law of war (the jus ad bellum) and the law in war (the jus in bello). The international institutional framework within which the military force is exercised is also of interest; for Sweden, primarily and traditionally the UN and the UN Security Council (UNSC), but also – and relatively more recently – NATO.
