ABSTRACT

The military interventions conducted since 9/11 have witnessed plenty of tactical and operational-level adaptations to tackle the challenges faced in the complex operational theatres in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the more contested adaptations has been the introduction of gender perspectives in operations and the increasing roles of women. Specific gender-related functions such as Gender Field Advisors, Gender Focal Points, Female Engagement Teams and Cultural Support Teams have been created, and gendered analysis and planning have to some extent been introduced into staff processes and operations.
