ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the extent to which Nordic politicians are involved in both national and international networks and the types of networks and contacts. It identifies the learning ecologies of the respective regions and cities. The chapter outlines the extent and range of the network involvement of politicians. It explores patterns or profiles of network involvement are analysed. These profiles represent the learning ecologies of politicians. Network involvement is largely driven by policy preferences. Politicians take part in networks because they have policy views and seek confirmation and additional information regarding those views. Patterns of network involvement are specialized with signs of segmentation. Segmentation is quite moderate, however, so cross-border networks as learning ecologies still represent flexible channels of adaptation to changing environments. Learning ecologies cannot be said to be transient since network involvement forms stable clusters and the level of political participation has remained fairly stable over time.
