ABSTRACT

In January 2004, daytime television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan launched their book club and sparked debate about the way people in Britain, from the general reader to publishers to the literati, thought about books and reading. The TV Book Club is somewhat different from the Richard & Judy Book Club is a dedicated book program of 30 minutes hosted by a group of regular presenters unlike the husband and wife team joined by special guests as was the format for the Richard & Judy Book Club. The opening up of the TV Book Club to adult themes enabled by the new format of the book club, which is a less domestic set up as it includes five adults rather than a husband-and-wife team and as it is programmed in an evening slot. In several ways their online book discussion is less like the book groups who meet in people's homes and libraries than is The TV Book Club.
