ABSTRACT

The CHUM is the largest university hospital centre in Quebec, not only in terms of care but also in terms of training and research. The mammoth project involves the redevelopment of the three existing hospitals into one new facility. The new hospital will act as a tertiary referral centre for 1.7m people in Quebec. The government will pay 45 per cent of the cost of the new hospital upfront. The University of Montreals Guy Breton was the CHUMs special consultant on the project and led the planning for the modifications, including a total of 39 operating rooms, an increase from the initial 30, a total of 772 beds, up from 700, plus an office for every doctor at the hospital. Also, instead of originally envisioned renovations to the 50 year-old St-Luc Hospital. The credit crunch threatened to derail the project early on, causing Infrastructure Quebec to restructure parts of the transaction to appeal to a changing market.
