ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the role of Latin Americanism in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and to describe the most important aspects of the action of this intergovernmental organization during its first years of operation. The first UNESCO mission in the field of social sciences started on July 31rst, 1950. French anthropologist Lvi-Strauss was sent to Pakistan and the American Gillin to South America. The missions purpose was to conduct a study on the teaching of social sciences, elaborate a list of specialists in social sciences, evaluate the possibility of establishing local associations that could be integrated to international associations sponsored by UNESCO and to deliver conferences on the latest aspects of UNESCOs research and activities in the field of social sciences Originally in French. The UNESCO Social Science Department wanted to ensure feasibility and subsequent continuity of this initiative before committing to financial aid and experts.
