ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a rapid appraisal of the growing Brazilian diaspora in the UK reveals how ethnicity is reaffirmed by means of consumption of typical foods. Using a typology based on ethnic origin consumption, 1 traits of demand reveal ethnicity indicators such as origin, culture and acculturation.

This chapter will:

explore the motives behind migration of Lusophone groups, especially the Brazilians;

map the dispersion of Brazilian in diaspora and food outlets in the UK;

address issues of consumption and ethnicity;

provide an understanding of Brazilians’ ethnic food consumption and preferences while in diaspora;

gain an insight into the likely acceptance of cachaça by British drinkers;

propose the argument that the demand for ethnic Brazilian foodstuffs could be too ethnically charged.
