ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates an aspect generally overlooked in current research: the framing of transnational mobility in media discourse in connection to migration as a public issue. It discusses the analytical relationship between transnationalism, migration and mobility in the context of Romanian labour migration in the European Union (EU). The chapter analyses a collection of articles from serious Romanian press between 2011 and 2014 to highlight patterns of meaning and visibility of mobility in this particular context. The methodological framework draws on elements of critical discourse analysis in order to emphasize discursive choices in the media construction of mobility in relation to intra-EU migration. Public discourses instrumentally construct regimes of mobility. By repeatedly quoting British sources that express only one type of positioning, the newspapers in Romania legitimise the idea of a dominant discourse in the UK.
