ABSTRACT

Africa is the second largest continent in the world in terms of area – it extends from 37°21’ N to 34°51’15” S over a distance of 8,000 kilometres – and of population. The continent consists of 54 sovereign states and includes various offshore islands. Africa is divided into four economic regions for the purpose of this chapter: Northern (countries north of the Sahara); Western (UEMOA); Eastern (COMESA); and Southern Africa (SADC). Aviation, especially low cost carriers (LCCs), will be dealt with in terms of these African regions. This chapter commences with the aviation profile of Africa and this is followed by a discussion of the African aviation industry and the LCC market. The chapter concludes with a presentation of two ‘best practice’ examples of LCC airlines, one in the north and one in the south.
