ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between continuity and discontinuity from the 1930s to the 1950s in Northeast China by tracing the history of the Anshan Iron and Steel Company (AISC). The iron and steel industry was the most important component of the munitions industry. For this reason, its development process strongly reflected the military picture, and was a mirror also of the international order in Asia. The reconstruction of the AISC in the Three Year Reconstruction Period can be described as miraculous. In 1953, the First Five Year Plan (FFYP) supported by the USSR commenced. At Anshan, some parts of the FFYP were launched in 1952 that is No.7 blast furnace, the seamless tubing mill, and the heavy rolling mill. Anshan is located in the Southern part of Northeast China. The Northeast became the most important district in the Chinese Civil War immediately after the surrender of Japan and the collapse of the Manchukuo regime.
