ABSTRACT
The story of the visit is best told through the surviving correspondence, but perhaps a brief note on its background is in order. In 1948, Paul Breman had, at 17 and in his last year in school, made a Dutch translation of Du Bois's 'Litany of Atlanta', published the following year in the literary magazine Podium, which had earlier printed his translations of Langston Hughes, Frank Horne and Waring Cuney. In December 1957, he asked Dr Du Bois for permission to use the 'Litany' in the bilingual anthology that Rosey Pool and he were commissioned to compile, and on 15 July 1958, he wrote again to Du Bois, saying the book was 'at the printers' and ending his letter with: 'Main future project is a series of books of poetry by US Negro authors. The last paragraph of this letter was taken up in Breman's reply of 21 July 1958: 'Do come to Holland.
