ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a fictional, but typical, workplace bullying complaint and the potential options available to most individuals and organizations for dealing with it. It provides a particular interest to those who have been or are accused of bullying, as well as to those who perceive themselves to be victims, and also to managers and organizations seeking the best possible solutions through mediation. Formal Investigation remains a very common route for bullying complaints, however personal experience suggests that it is the least effective at creating change in behaviour in the longer term and rebuilding working relationships within the workplace. What it does provide is a determination as to who is at fault and for some that is important. Increased discussion and awareness raising about expected behaviour within organizations at all levels and in particular what constitutes acceptable performance management. Consideration to be given to helping managers to examine and improve their current skills through individual coaching.
