ABSTRACT

To create sustainable development, our present generation must not take resources that will be detrimental to future generations. We must learn to use the resources wisely. Each material must be used sparingly, many times over, and eventually made into other things: reduce, re-use and recycle. The working life of a good can be extended as a result of preventative maintenance. Parts that are expected to break can be replaced prior to the anticipated malfunction. Goods in poor condition may be serviced, repaired when damaged, or rebuilt to refurbish and extend their useful life. Cruise ships serve for many decades. The fittings in cabins are frequently replaced to maintain it as ‘ship shape’. Safety specific equipment are checked and replaced when necessary. Certificates of conformance with safety and health criteria ensure vehicles are in adequate condition to serve for a defined period – typically one or two years.
