ABSTRACT
Recent discussions in most European countries and in international organisations such as EU and OECD in relation to the future developments in the welfare state have to a very high degree focussed on whether or not the changes in demography in the next 30–50 years will mean that reductions in, the dismantling or retrenchment of the welfare states are necessary.
