A key potential benefit of hosting mega-events such as the Olympic Games that has increasingly attracted nations and cities to bid to host them is the potential to inspire and engage people, particularly young people, in sport and physical activity. Reasons for this range from tackling obesity and other health issues, thus reducing the cost of health service delivery, and to encouraging social cohesion. This research is based upon PhD data collected by the first author that aimed to determine what factors impact on the creation of a sustainable London 2012 Olympic Games grassroots sport participation legacy from the perspective of voluntary sport clubs.
