Research on mega events, and particularly mega sporting events, has grown considerably over the past 30 years. While this body of literature has made progress in deconstructing the concept, identifying variations, different contexts and processes associated with legacy, little has been done to synthesise this knowledge and identify complementary and contradictory assertions. The purpose of this chapter is to report the findings of 2 systematic reviews of literature on Mega Sporting Events (MSE) and Non Mega Sporting Events (NSME), to ‘take stock’ of current research and develop recommendations for future research to advance this field of knowledge. This chapter makes a fundamental contribution to the literature on mega events through a systematic evaluation of the field and provides a guide for future legacy research and management efforts.
