ABSTRACT

The concept of graduate attributes can be extended to encompass awareness and application of ethical values and principles that are transferable across contexts and disciplines in relation to the contributions which graduates will make to society. This chapter considers the relevance of ethical learning to completing students from perspectives of purpose, theory and practice. It examines what is meant by the idea of an ethical graduate and why this concept is significant to 21st-century students as they prepare to enter an expanding range of professional settings. The chapter reviews theories of ethical learning and ideas about the development of moral perspectives and presents case studies of two professions which present practice examples of ethical teaching and learning. It concludes with examples of individual and collective ways in which learners can develop ethical awareness, skills and capabilities as academic graduates, professional practitioners and global citizens.
