ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of ostracism on individuals who have come in contact with the criminal justice system (CJS) as well as its potentially deleterious impact on their families and wider society. Within the chapter, the Temporal Need-Threat Model of Ostracism is explored and its clinical application when working with a forensic population is outlined. This chapter also argues for the practicality of including the experience of ostracism in key areas of therapeutic work in forensic practice such as assessments, formulation and treatment. Additionally, the role of ostracism in a range of important areas of forensic practice such as patient treatment acceptance and enhancing treatment outcomes, violence reduction and understanding of radicalisation processes are discussed.
