ABSTRACT

The larger vessel and faster vessel are totally integrated within the industry and although basic principles still apply, new equipment tends to dictate the methods of berthing and mooring. Mooring operations are considered as hazardous operation at any time and a full risk assessment should be made prior to the handling of rope or wire moorings. The weather conditions are a critical feature and should not present an intolerable risk to personnel while mooring activities are ongoing. The open moor is used when additional holding power is required. It would be employed when a single anchor would not provide enough weight to hold the vessel and prevent the ship from dragging in non-tidal water. The vessel should approach the berth with the wind on the beam or slightly abaft the beam. The stern mooring wire should be secured in bights by light seizings in forward direction to join the ganger length of the anchor cable before the approach is begun.
