ABSTRACT

Manufacturers have devised novel ideas to satisfy increased legislation and many old-fashioned ideas have been scrapped altogether. Equipment in motor propelled survival craft has been amended to suit the twenty-first century. Development, riding on the back of the ever larger ship, means that the seafarer must be prepared to see increased change in life-saving appliances. Novel life-saving appliance or arrangement embodies new features not fully covered by the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) text or by the code, but which provides an equal or higher standard of safety. The lifeboat engine and accessories shall be designed to limit electromagnetic emissions so that the engine operation does not interfere with the operation of radio life-saving appliances used in the lifeboat. Lifejackets used with free-fall lifeboats and the manner in which they are carried or worn shall not interfere with the entry into the lifeboat, the occupants' safety or the operation of the boat.
