ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers professions and enterprise in global perspective. It discusses how the global narrative about professions has been reconstituted theoretically and substantively with wider changes over time. These changes include the emergence of enterprise as a dominant logic, along with the development of professional service firms. The book examines changes in professionalism in an enterprise context. It explores trends related to enterprise, hybrid professionalism and the public sector. The book also examines entrepreneurship in professional service firms. It reviews previous work on entrepreneurship in professional services covering three levels of analysis – the entrepreneurial team, the entrepreneurial firm, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem within which the creation and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities take place on a growing scale. The book looks at key issues related to professions and professional service firms.
