ABSTRACT

A sustainability action toolkit could be the end project of the self, eco, and peace inquiry projects. In other words, from knowing oneself more, from connecting to ecosystems and community, and from understanding a bit more about power and violence in the places we inhabit, what transformative action can we engage in to alleviate suffering? The development of a sustainability toolkit with economic, social, and environmental action domains, serves to move beyond self and community awareness into fields of transformative action that change the way individuals relate to each other, groups relate to groups, and humans relate to the natural world. Learners could answer the question, where is our power, personally and collectively, to make changes to alleviate violence and suffering, to build peace, community, and happiness? This exploration of these connections might encompass experiential learning exercises that demonstrate interdependence and the importance of human and ecological diversity (Timpson et al. 2009). Ultimately, the purpose of an earth connections curricula unit would be to raise awareness and action aligned with principles of nonviolence, interdependence, inclusion, as well as economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Reflection and reengagement as part of the learning journey, and after the sustainability toolkit is complete and acted upon, are essential for ongoing awareness and continued transformative action.
