ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some general principles of integrated modelling across different natural resources and the importance of developing more integrated approaches across scales to address several key sustainability development challenges. It explores the dynamics of the resource nexus. Adopting a resource nexus may help address environment and policymaking issues, enabling a more future-oriented and sustainable trade beyond geopolitics and resource nationalism. The five-node resource nexus model concept can be used to guide the modelling approach. Integration of modelling tools can support decision-making at all levels to identify local targets that are in line with global Sustainable Development Goals. As a result, a sustainability modelling approach that is taken by the policymakers should integrate different parts of the available resources. The Integrated Dynamic Assessment (IDA) 3 model has been developed as a vehicle for teaching multi-country, multi-regions nexus modelling, capturing the dynamics and trade-offs between resources.
