ABSTRACT

The supply side of resource provision is often seen from two contrasting views: one narrative is the scarcity debate and 'limits to growth', according to which the availability of resources is limited and uncertain. The other narrative is one of optimism and argues in favour of abundant supply, where any potential scarcity is prevented through technical progress and international trade. This chapter explores the risk of a 'resource curse redux' in resource-rich developing countries originating from stress in water, food, and energy systems, as well as knock-on effects this may have on international supply chains and resource security. The management of natural resources has been an important yet contentious policy issue, in particular in resource-rich developing countries. For long, the sustainability principles for using abiotic resources have been related to their availability and shifting the resource base of economies to a more renewable one.
