ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the global governance mechanisms – existing and emerging – address the resource nexus and offer insights on the challenges of integrated approaches, common policy instruments, and institutional architectures. It seeks to contribute to improving policy outcomes and generate research agendas for engaged scholarship. The UN Convention on Combatting Desertification is a central body in the land domain. Land management has been a critical issue on the UN agenda because of the importance of soil for agriculture and resilience and because of land's vulnerability as an ecosystem. Achieving goals in water, food, energy, land, and minerals policies, and contributing to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires instruments and mechanisms that recognize the multidimensional nature of the resource nexus and the interconnections among the different dimensions. Facilitating linkages and promoting integration lie at the core of a successful strategy for implementing the SDGs.
