ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine how institutions of higher education effectuate and participate in Indigenous language revitalization. The focus will be on the United States and Canada. The chapter begins with preliminaries regarding the importance of young adults to language revitalization and a review of the range of existing programs. We will then examine in some detail the program with which I am most familiar—Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani—the Hawaiʻi state Hawaiian language college in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The chapter will close by discussing some possible future directions.
