ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the journey of the Kāi Tahu people of New Zealand as they have worked to revitalize their heritage language. The challenges of minority language revitalization that they have experienced and the strategies they have put in place in order to overcome them are discussed, including the establishment of their tribal language vision, Kotahi Mano Kaika, Kotahi Mano Wawata—A thousand homes, a thousand dreams. With a significant journey still ahead to achieve the goal of a living, vibrant language, the chapter discusses the importance of hope and commitment to help transform that dream into reality.
