ABSTRACT

The Master-Apprentice Language Learning Program was developed to provide a method for young adults to work with native-speaking elders to learn the language. It is a one-on-one method (though details can vary) using techniques of immersion, monolingual elicitation, and interacting through mutual participation in daily activities. This method is especially useful in linguistically diverse areas where there are few or no other options for learning an endangered language. We describe four areas where the Master-Apprentice model is being used—in California (where it was developed), British Columbia, the Sauk and Fox Nation, and more recently among aboriginal groups in Australia.
