ABSTRACT

In this chapter, language nests are defined not as an immersion day-care center, but rather as a physical location where the target language can live and breathe. This approach focuses on developing language use and has proven to be an essential part of language revitalization. This article lays out easy, actionable steps for developing a home language nest. These steps begin with deciding where to have a language nest, defining activities you do within that area, reclaiming domains, and using strategies to remain in the language. Once you have reclaimed enough domains and have some basic conversation skills specific to your language area, you then declare the location an English-free zone in the form of a language nest.
