ABSTRACT

Early childhood is a very large stage in a child's life, especially if we use the international definition of early childhood to mean from birth to 8 years of age. Within this stage are three distinct phases: 0 to 3 years, 3 to 5 years and 5 to 8 years. These phases involve numerous adults and professionals who work together to support children and their families. This chapter focuses on those professionals who work with young children on a daily basis and are responsible for their care and development. It provides an overview of the different types of professionals within the early years workforce and also provides an understanding of the standards for these professionals. The chapter considers how different early years professionals ensure they are working to the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. It explores some of the challenges faced by the diverse range of early years professionals.
