ABSTRACT

This chapter explores: what it means to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) and provides some background on the political, legal and social contexts which impact on LGB children and families. It also explores the concept of 'heteronormativity' and why it is important to challenge it within the classroom in order to provide a truly inclusive environment. The chapter describes the roles and relationships in families with same-sex parents and the need to include family diversity within the curriculum, and the role of schools and individuals in enabling LGB children and young people to fulfil their potential and maintain mental health and well-being alongside their peers. Stonewall is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights charity, founded in 1989. Its role is to work for 'the social and legal advancement for LGB people living in Britain'.
