ABSTRACT

This chapter explores: What is meant by the term 'disabled', the special educational need (SEN) Code of Practice 2014, medical models and social model of disability and SEN, and support available for disabled children in educational settings. The SEN Code of Practice also makes the important point that there is a distinction between disability and SEN, stating that while children may have conditions such as those outlined above, which fall under the disability definition: 'children and young people with such conditions do not necessarily have SEN, but there is a significant overlap between disabled children an young people and those with SEN'. The chapter explores a number of definitions of disability and, as has already been noted, the definitions discussed, be they disability as defined by UK law or as outlined by the World Health Organization, describe disability in terms of 'impairments', with 'negative-effect on ability', 'limitations' and 'restrictions'.
