ABSTRACT

The demand for water, food and energy is expected to increase by 30-50% in the next two

decades (WEF (World Economic Forum), 2011). The world’s water and energy resources

are already experiencing significant stress and shortfalls (Bazilian et al., 2012; Smil, 2000;

Waughray, 2011), yet rapidly increasing demand for these resources is foreseen in the

coming years (Hoff, 2011). In the literature, this anticipated increase is specifically

referred to in the context of growing populations, increasing rates of urbanization,

expanding middle-class lifestyles and diets, and an overall increase in the demand for

resources (Hoff, 2011; Van Vuuren et al., 2012; WEF (World Economic Forum), 2011).
