ABSTRACT

The Key Stage 1 curriculum follows on from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and is delivered to children in Years 1 and 2 of their primary schooling. The aim of the curriculum is to give children a sound grasp of the important skills and knowledge that they will need for a successful education, and so literacy and mathematics are key within this. The curriculum for Key Stage 1 emphasises the importance of English in children's development. This chapter mentions maths themes in reading books, and the link between literacy and maths is very important, as much of early learning in maths is about language. By the end of Key Stage 1 children need to know and understand large amounts of subject specific language, some of which is used in other contexts. Maths in Key Stage 1 is split into two areas, Numbers; and Measures, Shape and Space, which also includes basic statistics.
