ABSTRACT

To build and develop the nation and the well-being of its people, education has been a significant and highly prioritised political instrument in Tanzania. This chapter gives, to begin with, a short historical glimpse into the two major educational reforms in the country, namely Education for Self-Reliance (ESR) and Universal Primary Education (UPE), which commenced following independence in 1961;1 then, the more recent educational policies are reviewed. In brief, this section leads us from ‘Education for Self-Reliance’ to ‘Education for All’ (EFA), as macro-political approaches and initiatives.
