ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the 'culture of denial' prevalent in areas of the former Yugoslavia relating to the genocide in Srebrenica and examines the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to break through the wall of denial. The judicial findings of the ICTY are important not only for the development of international criminal law, but also in bringing justice to the victims and their families in the former Yugoslavia. There is an ongoing need for the ICTY to actively promote its legacy and reach out to the local communities. The ICTY, mandated to prosecute those individuals most responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia, has rendered five convictions for genocide. The chapter discusses genocide denial in the former Yugoslavia, where the ICTY has sought to make a contribution to the restoration of peace and reconciliation.
