ABSTRACT

The educational system is one that almost all families with a child with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) will experience. For some families, involvement with the educational system may begin as early as infancy. This chapter provides an overview of the legal requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The strategies that educators, families, and other professionals can use to effectively communicate and maximize student and family outcomes are provided. The benefits of family-professional partnerships are well documented in the education literature and extend to students, educators, and families. Families and professionals consider the strategies presented in the chapter to develop or repair relationships so that the stakeholders can collaborate to prevent or overcome barriers. Effective communication is foundational for building positive relationships and working partnerships. Professionals who maintain a relaxed, friendly, and enthusiastic disposition experience greater partnership among families and can increase family expectations for their children.
