ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the available literature on fathers of children with intellectual and development disability (IDD). It explores some of the specific factors research has found, related to fathers, which contribute to positive adjustment and resilience in their families. The chapter analyzes available research from two studies that specifically included fathers of children with Down syndrome (DS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It provides information for professionals on working to ensure fathers are included as important contributors to the family system. Fathers play an important role in the development of their children and they should be viewed as providing important contributions to their family system. When facing an IDD diagnosis, parents may respond differently to the information, as their knowledge, stress, responsibilities, coping strategies, and resources may vary. Raising a child with IDD brings a variety of challenges related to development, medical needs, social interactions, and education.
