ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of key issues for LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and ally) clients. It presents thought-provoking content and touching cases of LGBTQIA relationships and gay marriage. The book discusses deeply into considerations for school social workers and others who work with LGBTQIA youth on education and schools. It explores LGBTQIA family and parenting issues, highlights concerns for LGBTQIA clients interacting with social service agencies, especially youth in the foster care system, and attempts to the needs of those who are aging out of the system. The book also provides a solid theoretical background to race, ethnicity and practice approaches to engage in affirmative social work practice and affirmative practice with transgender and nonbinary people. It explains a compelling overview of healthcare issues, access and disparities LGBTQIA people may face.
